The UCSF Epilepsy Center is a world leader in the research and clinical treatment of seizure disorders in children and adults. Focus on innovation and coordinated research has made the UCSF Epilepsy Center a guiding force within the field. At present, the single largest epilepsy research endeavor, the Human Epilepsy Project, is centered at UCSF. This is an international, multicenter study focused on biomarkers for disease progression, treatment response, and outcomes in patients recently diagnosed with focal epilepsy. The goal of this important work is to improve the care and treatment of millions of patients with epilepsy. A previous large US National Institutes of Health funded study, the Epilepsy Phenome-Genome Project (EPGP), was also centered at UCSF. This study characterized various epilepsies with a high likelihood of genetic cause. The DNA from the participating patients in EPGP is now being analyzed as part of second major research study, the Epi4K-Gene Discovery in Epilepsy Project. These groundbreaking projects are changing the landscape of epilepsy, and we are enormously proud that UCSF physicians have been at the forefront. The clinical services of the UCSF Epilepsy Center are provided to both patients in the clinic and those in the hospital. The Epilepsy Center staff evaluates and cares for more than 2,000 patients a year with all types of seizure disorders. Care givers from multiple medical disciplines, including neurology, neurosurgery, neuropsychology, social work, and nursing work together in caring for patients, resulting in comprehensive and convenient care.

The Seizure Disorders Surgical Program at the UCSF Epilepsy Center has been treating patients with medically uncontrolled epilepsy for thirty years. It is one of the world's leading programs and is pioneering brain mapping techniques for pre-surgical evaluations in epilepsy. The program is one of only a few hospitals in the U.S. that uses a clinical magnetoencephalography (MEG) machine, an advanced technology that uniquely records and localizes brain function. Additionally, presurgical evaluations at UCSF exploit state-of-the-art brain imaging methods that can be combined with MEG to allow optimal planning and decision-making prior to any surgery. Advanced neuroimaging is a signature of the surgical program at UCSF. Careful use of these special imaging tools can provide additional information that allows many adults and children to pursue a surgical option that was not previously possible. For patients who ultimately undergo surgical treatment, subspecialty trained physicians work with improved anesthetic agents, intraoperative monitoring and innovative surgical techniques, including awake craniotomy, to provide the highest level of care available.
